Ψευδείς Ειδήσεις και Παραπληροφόρηση: Μια Λαογραφική Προσέγγιση

The spread of fake news and misinformation is one of the most pressing problems in the modern world. In an era where information is rapidly disseminated through social media, the internet, and traditional media, the ability to distinguish truth from misinformation is becoming increasingly difficult. While false news and misinformation are not new phenomena, modern technologies have increased their dissemination capabilities and scale.

In this study, we will examine the phenomenon of fake news and disinformation through a folkloric approach, focusing on how traditional narratives, myths, and cultural beliefs have influenced modern perceptions of the spread of false information. We will also analyze how fake news is connected to social needs, cultural traditions, and psychological processes that lead people to believe misleading stories or events.

  • Folklore and the Origin of Misinformation

1.1 Myths and Legends as Primary Forms of Disinformation

Folklore, in the sense of the collection and transmission of traditional stories, legends, and beliefs, has played a crucial role in the creation and dissemination of misinformation. Since ancient times, people have used myths to explain unexplained phenomena, attribute behaviors, or warn of dangers. These stories, while often creating fantastical images of the nature of the world, functioned as the "fake news" of the time, defining social norms and prejudices.

Traditional narratives, such as stories about strange creatures or ghosts, influence the way people perceive their world and often reinforce imagination and belief in unexplained events. Many of these stories, although recognized as myths and not as true events, continue to be part of cultural identity and are reproduced from generation to generation.

1.2 The Acceptance of Misinformation in Traditional Society

In traditional societies, stories and legends are often passed down orally, which facilitates the spread of misinformation. The inability to accurately verify facts, the limited number of sources, and the absence of reliable mass media made societies more vulnerable to accepting misinformation. The stories spread through folklore were not always accurate, but they often served social purposes, such as teaching moral lessons or enforcing rules of behavior.

This cultural practice, which existed long before the spread of modern technology, shows us that the dissemination of false information and its acceptance was, to a large extent, directly linked to the cultural makeup and social structures of the time.

  • The Modern Spread of Fake News: The Connection to Folklore

2.1 Social Need for Stories and Explanations

Modern society still needs stories to explain or justify the inexplicable. Misinformation, whether it is inaccurate news or misleading narratives, responds to the human need for explanations that are consistent with individuals' personal perceptions, feelings, and experiences. This need has not changed drastically since traditional societies, where people explained phenomena through myths and legends.

In modern society, the spread of fake news and misinformation is often linked to personal interests (eg political or economic) and emotional reactions to uncertainties or crises. Society seeks explanations that are consistent with existing beliefs, creating a "vicious cycle" of accepting false information. This process is deeply rooted in human psychology and has its roots in traditional folklore.

2.2 Fake News and Social Policy

Disinformation also plays an important role in modern social and political conflicts. Fake news is often used as a tool to influence public opinion, disrupt the political scene, or strengthen ideological currents. Through disinformation, politicians or organizations can create a false reality that reflects their interests and directs social reactions.

This phenomenon is not new. History is full of examples where fake news and misleading information have been used for political or social purposes. In ancient times, traditional societies spread false narratives about enemies or situations with the aim of strengthening social cohesion or war readiness.

  • The Relationship Between Fake News and Psychology

3.1 The Psychology of Fake News

The acceptance of fake news depends largely on human psychology. People tend to believe information that reinforces their existing beliefs, which leads to the spread of misinformation. Our psychological tendency to prefer information that confirms our beliefs and ignore or question that which contradicts them is known as “confirmation bias.” This psychological tendency enhances the spread of fake news and the creation of social bubbles, where people close themselves off in communities that reproduce and reinforce the same inaccurate information.

3.2 The Role of the Media and Social Networks

Modern media and social networks play a crucial role in the spread of fake news. The ability to instantly disseminate information on a global scale has increased the frequency and scale of misinformation. The rapid spread of news via the internet and social media enhances the effect of confirmation bias, while also making it more difficult to challenge or detect fake news.

  •  The Social Importance of Responding to Misinformation

4.1 Education and Information as an Antidote

To combat disinformation, a concerted effort is needed to educate and inform the public. Educational processes should focus on developing critical thinking skills so that people are able to identify and challenge false information. Also, developing digital skills and strengthening the ability to analyze information from reliable sources can help prevent the spread of disinformation.

4.2 Trust in Sources and Information Ethics

Media ethics and transparency in the presentation of information are also crucial in combating disinformation. Journalists and social media platforms must take responsibility for the accuracy of the information they disseminate and promote the truth, avoiding the ease of spreading sensational but inaccurate news.
